MEP Chris Davies said that the car industry is not doing enough to prove it's green credentials. That's just *********! The car industry is being unfairly saddled with the blame even though it is responsible for a tiny, unmeasurable amount CO2 emissions. The car industry has done more than most to reduce emissions, engine efficiency has improved 96% over the past 30 years. I think it is about time we stopped using global warming as an excuse to penalise drivers and the car industry and started taxing those who are responsible like other inefficient manufacturing industries. The car industry should be held up as a shining beacon of what can be achieved with new technology. It's alot easier for the government to slap more tax on the private car owner than lose friends amongst big business. See the article below for proof that the car industry does more than its share.

The motorist, and the car industry, are easy targets. Sitting ducks are easy targets & as you point out the car industry has done more than most to reduce emissions. The effect of emissions on global warming from cars is still questionable, but car manufacturers clearly have little choice but to adapt. If they do not then their cars will not be competitive & through additional tax burdens will become less competitive & less attractive to the consumer. The consumer will always end up paying for this research & development anyway! Does anyone know how America & China for example tax their motorists to address what is obviously being sold as a global problem?

it's certainly not unfair to blame cars, full stop. but i agree that their visibility and everyday usage makes it easy for MPs to make facile comments about them being the only evil. but that's nothing new, is it?

Unmeasurable?
Is that why many people in the UK can cut their carbon footprint by as much as a third or a half by giving up their car?
You need to take responsibility for your impact, it is your responsibility.
UK transport emissions are responsible for the overall increase in total UK emissions.

The car industry has done more than most to reduce emissions, engine efficiency has improved 96% over the past 30 years.

Trouble is car ownership has increased a lot over the same time and cars themselves consume more energy with all the modern gizmos. The result is total UK car emissions have gone up. Also efficiency hasn't improved by 96%!
The physics of the internal combustion engine would never allow it.
In order for todays cars to achieve a big enough reduction to bring total vehicle emissions down to 1980s levels every car on the road today would have to do 80 to 100 mpg. This is basically because of increased ownership.

I think it is about time we stopped using global warming as an excuse to penalise drivers and the car industry and started taxing those who are responsible like other inefficient manufacturing industries.

What manufacturing industry?
UK manufacturing emissions have gone down, partly because we exported UK industry to other countries.
If you want to cut industrial emissions, then don't buy foreign imports!

Yes but 6000 people fly round the world to 2 dozen green conferences annualy care of various states. Not to mention the climate change concert that produced 300000 tonnes of CO2. You see you getting to work to make sure you can pay 40% income tax is not as important as Bono flying his hat first class. Cheesy

Its all a question of priorities.
